International Day!!

On the 19th July 2006 Carlingford High School took part in the schools first “International Day”. This day taught students to respect other cultures and allowed them to experience them in a fun, enjoyable and practical way.

Each student was placed into a country or region of their choice and they were then to take part in organising activities in which other students took part in and experience. This included trying food from that country, playing sports from that county and other activities.

This day was not just about eating food and playing sports though… there was also an assembly held in the school hall. This assembly was a chance for your country to teach other students, teachers and parents about your country and culture. This included traditional Indian dances, Korean love songs, a very “entertaining” fashion parade, cheerleading and many, many more!!

After the assembly had finished students and teachers were able to walk around the school visit each countries stall. Some of the countries or regions were Australia, USA, China, Japan, France, Italy, Germany, Korea, England, Ireland and many more!! Each of the stalls had an original idea which was taken from traditions or other signature sample of that particular country. This may have included traditional foods, activities and other fun things to do!!

I think this day was a huge success for Carlingford High as it gave the students a chance to appreciate the many cultures we have at the school and to teach them about other countries and cultures they may not be aware of. All in all the day was well organized and all the effort and time teachers and students put in was well appreciated. Congratulations Carlo!!

High School Musical ~ Review!!

Posted by lexp in Uncategorized

High School Musical - Pic.jpg

Disney’s “High School Musical” tells the story of Troy Bolton – The schools basketball captain who lives to impress his friends, classmates but most of all… his Dad. Gabriella Montez is a shy but courageous girl who knows more than your average 16 year old. Gabriella has competed in many Academic Competitions but has always had a passion for singing. In the end Troy and Gabriella both help each other out in building up the confidence to prove themselves against their classmates, friends and parents.

After meeting at a skiing resort during the holidays Troy and Gabriella were chosen to sing together at a New Year’s party. They both loved the company of each other and enjoyed signing together. They exchanged numbers but never thought they’d met again… until Gabriella turned up on the first day at Troy’s school, East High.

There is an audition for a position in the Winter Musical. After much fuss and excitement Troy and Gabriella accidentally audition and are given a call-back. When Ryan and Sharpay, the two drama buffs of East High, find out that Troy and Gabriella have received a call-back to “their” musical they are shocked and appalled.

While practicing for the musical Troy and Gabriella grow closer and their friendship expands. They become more than just friends and spend all their spare time rehearsing with their music adviser, Kelsey. As their friendship grows they realize they are actually becoming quite good!! After hearing Troy and Gabriella singing Ryan and Sharpay are outraged that they are sounding well… fantastic!! But Ryan and Sharpay are not the only ones who are upset about Troy and Gabriella singing….

Troy’s Basketball “posse” is upset that he’s giving up basketball to sing with Gabriella. They feel as thought they are been betrayed. Gabriella joined the Scholastic Decathlon team. She became quite close to one of the group members and when she found out that Gabriella was on the call-back list for the winter Musical she feels as though it was spoiling the chances of them winning as all her time would be devoted to practicing singing. Taylor Gabriella’s best friend and Chad, Troy’s Best friend design a plan to stop Troy and Gabriella participating in the musical.

Their plan succeeds… Gabriella over heard Troy speaking to Chad and the rest of his team saying that the whole singing thing means nothing… neither does Gabriella. Gabriella is heart broken when Troy tells how he really feels… so much that she tells Troy to forget about the call-backs. After Taylor and Chad see how miserable Troy and Gabriella are they tell them both the truth and how Troy only said those things because Chad and Taylor both knew that Troy would say those things if the basketball team made him feel bad about him putting singing with Gabriella as his first priority and his team second.

One major factor which I loved about this movie is that the whole story line was so inspiring and exciting… it made you feel really good inside whilst watching it and I know that I definitely benefited from it!! I think most teenager’s and Primary School student would enjoy this movie… ages around 8-15. The songs were one main component which made this movie original and fun!! Another aspect which I loved about this movie was the characters… each character had its own sense of style, humor and originality.

I would rate this movie 9.5/10 as I could not get the songs out of my head even 2 weeks after watching it!!

West Coast Eagles Speech

Posted by lexp in Uncategorized

Speech time of the year is one of my most dreaded past times. In reality I’m confident, loud and I never shut up… but when it comes to speeches I am unconfident, I speak too fast and pretty much anything bad you can do in a speech I ace!!

When I read the assignment note I almost fainted… I was sitting next to Sach (Little Miss Public Speaking: P) so she was anything but nervous! After I got over the shock of having to write a speech, I tried to think of a topic… these were my ideas

a) The History of “The Logies”

b) Cleopatra

c) And of course the best AFL team in the world… “The West Coast Eagles”

As a true West Coast supporter I chose to do my speech on “The West Coast Eagles”. I kind of regret the choice I made now but o well there’s always next year!! Anyway here it is…

“Good morning/good afternoon 8Red and Mrs. Raynor. Today I am going to tell you about the best AFL team in the competition the “WEST COAST EAGLES”. The west coast eagles were the first AFL team to come from WA after the AFL (then known as the VFL) decided to include teams from Perth and Brisbane in 1986.
Our current coach is premiership captain John Worsfold and our captain is Chris Judd after former captain Ben Cousins resigned at the beginning of this season. Both Chris Judd and Ben Cousins have won Brownlow Medals. Chris Judd in 2004 and Ben Cousins in 2005. The Brownlow Medal is given to the best and fairest player at the end of each season and are recognised as the best players in the league.
West coast made their debut in the 1987 season. We won our first official match against Footscray (now known as Western Bulldogs) at our home ground still known as Subiaco Oval. West Coast won their first premiership in 1992 against Geelong and became the first non-Victorian team to win a premiership. We won the flag again in 1994 also against Geelong.2005 was a very important year of West Coast. We spend most of the season on top of the ladder but unfortunately lost the Grand Final to the Sydney Swans by a very close 4 points. Although we lost, Chris Judd won the Norm Smith Medal which is given to the best player on the ground.
West Coast has started this season brilliantly with 5 wins and only 1 loss are currently in 3rd position on the ladder. Some of out key players this season are Chris Judd – a midfielder how gets plenty of the ball and manages to kick enough goals to get us over the line. Dean Cox is also a very valuable player to West Coast as he has the highest record for hit outs. West Coast has a very skillful midfield which is able to get the ball up forward. Some of these players are Daniel Kerr, Andrew Embely, Adam Selwood, Michael Braun, David Wirrapunda and many more. There are heaps more people I could mention that are important to the team but we’d be here for hours.
I hope you have found my speech interesting even though none of you probably follow AFL and even if you did you would most likely go for Sydney Swans. Either all I hope you enjoyed it. Thank you!!

Sophie Delizio

Posted by lexp in Uncategorized

I decided to write this post on a topic that is very important to me as it shows the true courage and bravery of a poor little girl who has inspired me as well as many other Australians who heard the tragic news.

At the end of 2003 a tragic car accident occurred. A day care centre in Manly was unfortunately hit by car. Two little girls were crucially affected by this tragedy. One of these girls was Sophie Delizio. Poor little Sophie suffered, with 90% of her body covered with burns.

All of Australia supported Sophie and the Delizio family as she made a miraculous recovery.  No one could believe this little girls bad luck but on the 5th of May of this year Sophie was unfortunately hit by a car again. She is now fighting for her life again in hospital. She is said to be in a stable condition.

What I wonder is why her. How can 1 little innocent girl go through so much bad luck at the age of 5 when there are so many cruel and evil people out there who don’t get punished at all. I think that all Australians should get behind Sophie and the Delizio family and offer their support and encouragement.

Saving Francesca

Posted by lexp in Uncategorized

Saving Francesca is a fantastic book written about a teenage girl named Francesca. Francesca is living a life full of depression, fun, love, putting up with your family and building true friendships.
Francesca’s mother, Mia, is suffering from depression and it’s breaking her family up. Her dad is telling them that everything will get better. But it’s not, it’s getting worse. Francesca and her brother Luca are being sent away to live with relatives so her mother can get better. It’s then Mia realises that she need her children to overcome her depression.
At school her life isn’t getting much better. After starting at a new school where none of her “Stella” friends are going she has to make friends with the dominating Tara, the slutty Siobhan and the quiet Justine. At first she doesn’t believe that these three girls could become her friends, but after being treated terribly Francesca realises that these tree girls are her true friends. After going to a school with more than 75% boys the reality is that you’re somehow you are going to make friends with boys. Francesca found this challenge well, challenging! In the end she meets Thomas and Jimmy who show her the real facts of life!!
A special boy that Francesca meets at her new school is William Trombal. He’s the footy team’s captain and an all round nice guy; at least he thinks he is. William has a girlfriend but yet he continuously flirts with Francesca. Of course Francesca fall for him and her heart is broken when she finds out the truth.
This book has a very touching and emotional story-line which is aimed at most teenage girls. It also deals with a lot of situations and problems that teenagers go through so I felt that I related to some of them. I would recommend it to anyone who loves to laugh, cry and be drawn into this amazing story-line.

St. Patrick’s Day

Posted by lexp in Uncategorized

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on the 17th of

March. The reason this day is celebrated is so that Irish are able to honour St. Patrick, the priest who first introduced Christianity to Ireland. St. Patrick was believed to be born in the fourth century in Wales.
St. Patrick’s Day a traditional day for spiritual renewal. The reason for wearing green, white and orange is that they are the colours of the Irish flag. One of the most well-known icons of the day is the “shamrock” this is used as a symbol of trinity.

Juvenile Justice

Posted by lexp in Uncategorized

Stanley Yelnats was wrongfully accused of stealing Clyde Livingstone, also known as “Sweet Feet’s” shoes which he had donated to a charity auction for an orphanage. Stanley was then sentenced to 18 months at Camp Green Lake. Don’t be fooled by the name, Camp Green Lake wasn’t a beautiful lake with fantastic scenery where you would send your children so they would learn the proper ways of society. It was a Juvenile Detention Centre for Young Adults. The lake dried up over 100 years ago leaving a desert that took over what used to be a town in middle of Texas.
Camp Green Lake was run by Warden Walker. On the surface she seemed relatively nice and kind, but as the story went on she turned out to be a really awful person. Another person trying to run the camp was Mr. Sir, a self-centred, sadistic, cruel man who had no authority to be teaching young adults the way of life. The counsellor of the camp was Mr. Pendanski. Mr. Pendanski was a terrible counsellor to the boys. He would tease them and make fun of the crimes they have committed. He told them that they have ruined their lives and that they were to blame for the messes they had made.
At Camp Green Lake the boys were to dig 1 hole each day measuring in 5ft diameter and 5ft in depth. I do not believe this is a suitable punishment as digging a hole everyday will not help you face what you have done and help correct your mistakes. I think a more suitable punishment would be a certain amount of community service so the victims could put back what they have taken out of the community. An example of this would be if Stanley were to work at the orphanage he (supposedly) stole the shoes from.
